Immigration routinely asks visa-free arrivals for a confirmed return or onward ticket and a first night's booking. Keep both reachable on your phone rather than describing them.
The officer sets the permitted stay, up to 90 days, and prints it on the entry stamp. Check it before leaving the counter — the stamp, not the published allowance, is what governs your stay.
⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate needed for your return to South Africa. South Africa is not a yellow fever endemic country. South African passport holders travelling directly from South Africa do not need a yellow fever certificate to enter Gambia. Separately from entry to the destination: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving — including returning South Africans — who has been in, or transited through, a yellow fever risk country. Gambia is on that list. Without a certificate you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to six days at a South African port of entry.
