Ghana is one of West Africa's most accessible countries for South Africans — English-speaking, stable, with an excellent food scene and a deep diaspora connection. Since 25 May 2026 entry requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation, free for African Union nationals but approved before departure. Visa on arrival was discontinued at the same time.

  • Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle (both UNESCO) are the most significant trans-Atlantic slave trade sites in West Africa — powerful and deeply moving experiences. Cape Coast town is 3 hours by road from Accra (shared taxis or bus). Guided tours through the castles are essential for context.
  • Kakum National Park's Canopy Walkway (40 metres above the forest floor) is one of only a few in the world and a dramatic highlight of any Ghana trip. Early morning gives the best chances for forest elephants and hornbills. 30km from Cape Coast.
  • Accra's food scene is excellent — Labadi Beach Hotel area, Osu Oxford Street, and East Legon neighbourhoods. Try jollof rice (Ghana vs Nigeria debates aside, Ghanaian jollof is exceptional), waakye (rice and beans), and kelewele (spiced fried plantain). Coco Lounge and Firefly Restaurant are popular mid-range options.

  1. Apply for the ETA at evisa.gis.gov.gh

    Ghana's own portal. The ETA is free for African Union nationals — any site charging for it is reselling a government form.

  2. Upload your passport and travel details

    Passport with six months' validity, a photograph, confirmed return ticket and accommodation.

  3. Wait for approval before booking non-refundable travel

    Usually a few days. Approval must be in hand before departure — airlines check it at boarding.

  4. Carry the approval and your yellow fever card

    Ghana requires a yellow fever certificate on arrival. Print the ETA approval rather than relying on a phone at the counter.

Health Requirements

⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate needed for your return to South Africa. South Africa is not a yellow fever endemic country. South African passport holders do not need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Ghana when travelling directly from South Africa. If you have transited through an endemic country within 9 days, a certificate may be required. Separately from entry to the destination: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving — including returning South Africans — who has been in, or transited through, a yellow fever risk country. Ghana is on that list. Without a certificate you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to six days at a South African port of entry. Ghana introduced a mandatory ETA and discontinued visa on arrival

From 25 May 2026 Ghana replaced its visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements with a digital pre-travel authorisation. Nationals of African Union member states outside ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States need a free Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for and approved before departure. ECOWAS and AES nationals remain visa-free with just a passport. Free does not mean automatic: without an approved ETA you will not be boarded.
