⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate needed for your return to South Africa. South Africa is not a yellow fever endemic country. South African passport holders travelling directly from South Africa do not need a yellow fever certificate to enter Benin. However, if you have transited through an endemic country within 9 days, a certificate may be required. Separately from entry to the destination: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving — including returning South Africans — who has been in, or transited through, a yellow fever risk country. Benin is on that list. Without a certificate you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to six days at a South African port of entry. Benin opened visa-free entry to citizens of every African Union member state on 30 August 2016, following Rwanda. It is a continent-wide exemption at 90 days, which supersedes the narrower list of eleven bilateral waivers still quoted in places — including the 30-day figure this page carried.
