Sweden rejected 36.3% of applications. Avoid these mistakes:
Article 32 of the Visa Code lets a consulate refuse where the purpose and conditions of the intended stay are not justified. In practice this is the ground cited when the itinerary, the bookings and the stated reason do not line up.
Fix: Make the itinerary, flight dates, accommodation and cover letter describe the same trip. Inconsistency between them is read as the purpose being unproven.
Applicants must show sufficient means for the stay and the return. Consulates read bank statements over months rather than a balance on the day of application.
Fix: Three to six months of statements showing ordinary activity, plus proof of income. A large deposit shortly before applying attracts the opposite of the intended effect.
The refusal grid's most-used box. It turns on ties — employment, property, dependants, study — rather than on anything about the trip itself.
Fix: Employer letter naming approved leave and a return date, property or business documents, and evidence of family responsibilities at home.
36.3% rejection rate — European Commission (DG HOME) visa statistics for consulates, 2025 — all-Schengen rate for applications lodged in Uganda (20,691 applications); Swedish authorities run no visa-issuing consulate in Uganda
2026 EU statistics put Uganda's Schengen refusal rate at 36.3%
The European Commission published consulate-level 2025 visa statistics on 28 May 2026. Of 20,691 short-stay applications lodged in Uganda, 36.3% were refused, against 34.2% the year before. Sweden operates no visa-issuing consulate in Uganda, so applications go through a representing member state and this national figure is the one that applies — there is no Sweden-specific rate for Ugandan applicants.
