Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026 after cases were imported from the DR Congo, and several countries introduced precautionary entry restrictions on arrivals from Uganda — the UAE suspended visas for arrivals from Uganda, the DR Congo and South Sudan from 6 June 2026. Uganda declared the outbreak contained on 5 July 2026 and asked for the restrictions to be lifted. Requirements on this route may have changed since we last checked, and some states are reviewing their rules week by week.

Mexico is a world-class destination — Cancún's Caribbean coast, Tulum's cenotes, and Mexico City's history and food are remarkable. For Ugandans, the practical challenge is applying at the Mexican Embassy in Nairobi (no embassy in Kampala). KEY SHORTCUT: Ugandans with a valid US, Schengen, Canada, or UK visa skip the Mexican visa entirely. Yellow fever mandatory. 180-day stay is very generous.

  • There is NO Mexican Embassy in Uganda — Ugandans must apply at the Mexican Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Factor in the cost and logistics of two Nairobi trips (submission and collection) or staying in Nairobi during processing.
  • IMPORTANT: Ugandans with a valid US B1/B2, Schengen, Canadian, or UK visa can enter Mexico WITHOUT a separate Mexican visa — this is strongly recommended over the Nairobi application route.
  • Yellow fever certificate is MANDATORY. Uganda is endemic and Mexico requires a valid yellow card at least 10 days old.

  • For most Ugandans, the US/Schengen visa exemption route is far more practical than applying in Nairobi. If you have an existing UK or Schengen visa, simply use it — no additional visa needed for Mexico.
  • Qatar Airways flies Entebbe (EBB) to Doha (DOH) with connections to Mexico City (MEX) — one of the more direct routings from Uganda. Emirates (via DXB) and Ethiopian Airlines (via ADD) also serve the route.
  • Cancún (CUN) is the easiest first trip to Mexico for East Africans — all-inclusive resorts with clear pricing, safe tourist zone, and short day trips to Chichen Itza, Tulum ruins, and cenotes. Mexico City requires more research but offers greater cultural rewards.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Check if you qualify for the US/Schengen visa exemption

    If you hold a valid US B1/B2, Canada, UK Standard Visitor, or any Schengen visa, you do NOT need a Mexican visa — this is the simplest path. Skip to Step 6.

  2. Get your yellow fever vaccination

    Visit UVRI Entebbe or Mulago Hospital Kampala if not vaccinated. Yellow card must be at least 10 days old.

  3. Complete Mexican visa application form

    Download from embamex.sre.gob.mx/kenia. Fill in completely and sign.

  4. Travel to Nairobi and submit at Mexican Embassy

    6th Floor, Delta House, Chiromo Road, Westlands, Nairobi. Apply in person. Pay ~USD 44 (~UGX 163,000). Return to Nairobi after 5–15 working days to collect.

  5. Allow 3–4 weeks total for Nairobi application logistics

    Factor in two Nairobi trips (submission + collection) or arrange to stay in Nairobi during processing. Total cost including Nairobi travel makes Mexico a significant investment for Ugandans.

  6. Book flights to Mexico

    Connect via Nairobi (NBO) then via London, Paris, Amsterdam, or US hubs to Cancún (CUN) or Mexico City (MEX). Or fly EBB–DOH–MEX (Qatar Airways). Total travel: 20–26 hours.

Health Requirements

⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate required. Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country. Mexico requires a valid International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) from travellers arriving from endemic countries. Certificate must be at least 10 days old. Obtain from UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala. Entry refused without it.

Why Applications Get Rejected

  • Economic solvency not demonstrated

    The financial test is the substantive one, assessed over months of account activity rather than a closing balance.

    Fix: Several months of statements plus proof of income, and documentation of any third-party sponsor.

  • Ties to Uganda not established

    Employment, property and dependants are what the officer weighs against the presumption that you may stay.

    Fix: Employer letter with approved leave and a return date; property or business registration where relevant.

  • The Nairobi journey derails the application

    There is no Mexican mission in Uganda, and an application that cannot be completed in person stalls rather than being refused outright.

    Fix: Confirm with the Nairobi embassy in advance what must be done in person and what can be couriered, before spending on the 577 km trip.
