Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Get yellow fever vaccination

    Ghana Health Service centre in Accra, Kumasi or a regional capital. The yellow card must be at least 10 days old before you travel. Kenya Immigration at JKIA checks it on arrival — this is the one document that will stop you at the border.

  2. Check your passport has 6 months validity

    Six months beyond your return date and at least one blank page. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay: Legal Notice No. 93 of 30 May 2025 exempted Ghanaians from the Electronic Travel Authorisation.

  3. Book a return flight and accommodation

    Ethiopian Airlines: Accra (ACC) → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Nairobi (NBO), about 8–10 hours in total. Immigration may ask to see a confirmed onward ticket and your first night's booking, so have both on your phone.

  4. Present your passport and yellow card at JKIA

    You are stamped in for up to 90 days at the counter. Then: Maasai Mara (Great Migration July–October), Amboseli (Kilimanjaro and elephants), Nairobi (Giraffe Centre, Nairobi National Park), Diani Beach, Mount Kenya, Lake Nakuru.

Kenya scrapped the eTA for African passport holders

Legal Notice No. 93, gazetted 30 May 2025, amended the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Regulations to exempt nationals of every African country except Libya and Somalia from the Electronic Travel Authorisation. Eligible travellers now present a valid passport at the border and receive an entry stamp — no online application, no USD 30 fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Ghanaians need a visa for Kenya?
No — and since 30 May 2025 you do not need an ETA either. Legal Notice No. 93 exempted every African nationality except Libyans and Somalis from Kenya's Electronic Travel Authorisation, so the USD 30 fee Ghanaians used to pay no longer applies. Present a valid Ghanaian passport and your yellow fever certificate at the border and you are stamped in for up to 90 days.
Why do some websites still charge Ghanaians for a Kenya ETA?
Because they have not updated, or because they are agencies charging a service fee for something that is no longer required. Kenya's own portal, etakenya.go.ke, is the only authority worth checking. Ghanaian passport holders have been exempt since 30 May 2025 — there is no form to submit and no fee to pay.
Do Ghanaians need a yellow fever card for Kenya?
Yes — Ghana is a yellow fever endemic country and Kenya requires a valid vaccination certificate from Ghanaian travellers. Get vaccinated at a Ghana Health Service centre; your yellow card must be at least 10 days old. JKIA immigration checks it on arrival, and this is now the only entry document that can turn you away.
